Rethink Success: Start With Clarity Before Your Next Move

Kent Wu • October 19, 2026

TL;DR: A good-paying job can look like success and still leave you burnt out, stuck, or wondering if you still matter. Before you quit, stay or start something new, get clear on what you actually want. Clarity comes first. The courage to act follows.

Heard Mindcoach.sg on the life transitions panel at CPF's Ready for Life Festival 2026 (25 October, National Museum of Singapore)? This page gathers the questions from the panel and the next steps you can take.

When "Success" Stops Feeling Like Success

Many people who come to us are doing well on paper. Stable job. Steady pay. The life they were told to aim for. And yet the words they use tell a different story:

  • "I'm burnt out."
  • "I feel stuck."
  • "I feel irrelevant."
  • "I have no choice."
  • "I need the money, but I'm missing my family."

If any of these sound like you, you are not failing. You are noticing that the definition of success you were handed no longer fits the life you want. That noticing is the start of a decision.

The Fear Behind "I Can't Leave"

At the back of most minds sits a simple thought: "This is a good-paying job. Where else will I land something guaranteed?"

That fear is real and it deserves respect. Bills, family and CPF contributions don't pause for a career rethink. But look closely and the fear is often not about leaving. It is about not knowing what comes next. When "next" is unclear, staying feels safe and moving feels reckless.

The same gap shows up in the other direction. Some people leap, into a new field, a side business or trading, hoping passion will turn into income. Some do well. Others discover they escaped one problem only to land in another that feels the same. The difference is rarely courage. It is clarity.

Three Questions Worth Sitting With

Masni Goh, ICF-certified coach and lead coach at Mindcoach.sg, often starts with questions rather than answers. Try these on your own:

  1. What will quitting mean to you? Not just the job you leave, but what you hope to gain and what you are afraid to lose.
  2. What happens if you don't leave? Picture yourself in the same seat three years from now. Is that relief or regret?
  3. What happened, and what changed in you? Most turning points begin with a moment. Naming yours tells you what you now care about.

Write your answers down. If one question is hard to answer, that is usually the one that matters most.

Why Clarity Comes Before Action

Coaching clarity is the process of turning a vague feeling ("something has to change") into a clear direction ("this is what I am moving towards, and this is my next step"). It is the catalyst for action.

Without clarity, people tend to do one of two things: stay frozen, or move fast in the wrong direction. With clarity, even a small step carries weight because you know why you are taking it.

A practical way in: list what you don't want, then flip each one into what you do want. We explain this step by step in You Know What You Don't Want. But It's Your Wants That Steer the Boat.

If Burnout Is Affecting Your Health, See a Doctor First

Burnout is not only a career question. If you are struggling to sleep, eat or function, or your mood has stayed low for weeks, please speak to a doctor or a mental health professional. Coaching works alongside medical and psychological care. It does not replace it. Not sure which kind of support you need? FAQ

What does "rethink success" mean?

It means checking whether the version of success you are chasing still matches what you value now, such as health, family time, meaning or growth, rather than only income or title.

Should I quit my job if I'm burnt out?

Not before you are clear on why you want to leave and what you are moving towards. If burnout is affecting your health, see a doctor first. Then use coaching to decide between staying, adjusting your role or leaving.

What is coaching clarity?

Coaching clarity is the outcome of structured coaching: a clear picture of what you want, what is holding you back, and the next concrete step to take.

Is coaching the same as therapy?

No. Coaching focuses on present choices and future action. Therapy treats mental health conditions. Many people benefit from both.
